Tribute to The Wire: Ode to Dukie and Wallace
The Wire is the best television crime drama to ever come on television.

Don’t worry, I won’t spoil a thing, but I will give my passionate opinion of the show. So if you want an unbiased, untainted attitude before watching the show, then I don’t want you to read this. I want you to enjoy it just like I did. And it’s really hard to express my feelings effectively without going into details.
But The Wire is underrated enough as it is, and I figured that I’d rather try to attract people to watch it, then relate to the few people I know that appreciate it.
I post this message in order to commemorate the release of The Wire: Season 5 today (get like me).
The Wire the violent. The Wire was vulgar. The Wire the raunchy. And all that made it all the more “worthwhile”.
“Why is The Wire better than any other show?”
The Wire, from a distance, has everything that your average ‘cop’ show has. It has cops. It has judges. It has crooks. Yada, yada, yada.
But thank God for HBO’s lack of censorship. There’s able to show what real people say, do, and think. It’s genuine insight into the drug game.
Each character has something to love and hate about them. Nobody gets a pass. What other show does that? Expect to relate to each character…even the ones that you’ll seldom see. even the others you hate.

“What makes The Wire so special?”
The Wire was beyond entertainment, it literally opened my eyes to that side of the world. I mean, I always knew it was there. But This show makes you sympathize for the plight that the drug game puts everybody through. But the Wire came from every angle, in which you realized what drives every character. Whether they are good. Whether they are bad. Whether they’re considering flipping sides.Like watching any other show, you begin to relate for the characters. With all that, you will be captivated…
You see how…
…politics is always politics.

…money plays a role in both progressing, yet impeding our society.

…how volatile any type of potential is in the hood.

…how good can go bad, and bad can go good.

All of the above are concepts there we are all familiar with, but the Wire portrays them beyond a way that we [outside 'the game'] can imagine. That’s what makes this show so groundbreaking
This wasn’t your average show which follows the network prime time formula, in which the cops were all saints and the “crooks” were all immoral. You have a reason to love and hate every character.
I guarantee that when you watch it. You’ll get hooked. To the point that you’ll stay up all night, watching episode after episode. And then watch them again, with commentary.
Favorite Character: Omar (no homo – ‘no pun intended’)

Favorite Season: Season 4, where they introduced a cast of children. Touching.

Favorite Theme Song version: Season 1 & Season 4 – “…keep him in the hole, down in the hole.”
Click here for an eye-opening, in depth, “Wire” analysis [No spoilers]. This guy goes pretty deep.
ALERT:I warn anyone that wants to watch this series to NOT to research on the series prior to watching it. Don’t be like me and ruin several surprises for yourself. <sigh>
Note: If you choose to leave a comment, please don’t spoil it either.

There are several things that make The Wire so great. You already mentioned the complexity of each character, but also the humanity in the worst politician or the vulnerability of the hardest crook. All of the past crime shows have shown all of the characters as one dimensional puppets. And it’s really not that easy.
It’s also great because the show allowed for so many talented African American actors to get shine. They weren’t forced into any shucking and jiving, there wasn’t coonery and bafoonery. Look at Omar- he’s pretty trill. He kills without batting an eye. But he’s also spiritual, doesn’t cuss and happens to be gay.
The Wire has had me yelling at the TV, ready to cry, ready to go out and bust a couple of heads myself and really look at the inner city crisis and the drug problem in a whole new light.
And I still haven’t seen all the seasons. lol
I challenge anyone and everyone to just watch the first two episodes. The characters will captivate you, the storyline will keep you from getting any work done, and you will appreciate television again. trust.
